Biography:
After four seasons in Buffalo and three with the New York Jets, Sam Cowart joined the Vikings on March 18, 2005, in a trade where the Vikings gave up a seventh-round draft pick. In return, Minnesota received an experienced, talented veteran middle linebacker who had more than 100 tackles in six out of his seven seasons in the NFL.

2004: Played in nine games with two starts at middle linebacker, but an early-season knee sprain limited his action in his final season with the Jets.

2003: Started 15 games at weakside linebacker and recorded 145 tackles, including a season-high 18 in a game at Oakland.

2002: Started all 16 games at WLB in his first season with the Jets, recording 154 tackles and a career-high eight passes defensed.

2001: Started the season opener before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury.

2000: In his final season in Buffalo, was voted to the Pro Bowl, joining Ray Lewis as the AFC’s inside linebackers on the honorary squad. Named first-team All-Pro by College and Pro Football Newsweekly and second-team by the Associated Press and Football Digest. Led the Bills with 181 tackles even though he missed the last four games of the season with an ankle injury. Had a career-high 5.5 sacks.

1999: Started every game for the NFL’s No. 1 defense and recorded 186 tackles, fifth-most in Bills history.

1998: Started 11 of the 16 games in his rookie season. Earned All-Rookie honors from College and Pro Football Newsweekly, Pro Football Weekly and Football Digest. Recorded 119 tackles on defense and 18 on special teams. Was the 39th overall selection in the draft.

College: Earned All-ACC honors with 116 tackles and four sacks in his senior year at Florida State. Named first-team All-American by The Sporting News, Football News and The Sports Network. Was a finalist for the Dick Butkus and Bronko Nagurski Awards. A knee injury kept him out of action in 1996. Started every game in 1995, recording 115 tackles, and every game in 1994, recording 76 tackles. Business major.

Personal: Was one of 30 NFL players enrolled in an executive education program at the Harvard Business School during the 2005 offseason. Married to Karkeisha, has a daughter, Deja, and son, Samuel IV. Was a SuperPrep All-America selection and earned honorable mention from USA Today. Was the Florida Times-Union Defensive Player of the Year in 1992 and first-team All-State.
