2005: Was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an unrestricted free agent to play in their version of the West Coast Offense. Played in nine games and started the final seven games after starter Donovan McNabb was lost for the season. Compiled a 2-5 record as a starter, completing 94 of 207 passes for five touchdowns with eight interceptions. Also ran 34 times for 118 yards and three TDs. Best game was his final game of the season, when he threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns vs. the Redskins. Following the season, was targeted by his former offensive coordinator Brad Childress to come to the Vikings as the top backup to Brad Johnson.
2004: Only action came in relief of Joey Harrington with the Detroit Lions Nov. 25 vs. the Colts. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 77 yards with one interception.
2003: Saw action in relief in three games as a backup for the Lions. He completed nine of 31 passes that year for 87 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
2002: Played in eight games and started four of them. Finished the year with 62 completions out of 147 passes for 874 yards with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. Also ran 14 times for 96 yards and three TDs. Got a start vs. the Vikings and threw a career-high 44 passes, completing 19 of them for 293 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
2001: Started the final three games of the season, finishing the year with 53 completions of 115 passes for 671 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, while rushing 27 times for 145 yards and one TD. Got a start vs. the Vikings in which he won – his only win as a starter prior to 2005 – completing 15 of 28 passes for 241 yards and rushing 12 times for 74 yards and a touchdown.
College: Four-year starter in the West Coast Offense at Rutgers and was the first Rutgers QB to ever be taken in the NFL draft when he was taken on the fifth round (No. 149 overall) by the Lions. Finished his college career second on the school’s all-time passing list for attempts (974), yards (6,608) and touchdowns (41). Best year was as a senior, when he completed 169 of 340 passes for 2,157 yards and 18 touchdown passes.
Personal: Half-brother Bobby Slater is an assistant trainer with the Chicago Bears. Has the distinction of being the only player in the NFL to play with two sets of brothers – the Detmers (Koy and Ty) and the McDougles (Stockar and Jerome). Played a considerable amount of youth soccer, to which he credits much of his running prowess as a QB. Was named first team All-State as a high school senior at North Allegheny High School in Pennsylvania and competed in the Pennsylvania-Ohio Big 33 All-Star Game. Aside from football, he lettered twice in basketball and baseball in high school.
