Biography:
It took two times of trying to sign D’Wayne Bates, but the Vikings finally got a wide receiver they could use before the 2002 draft. After a paperwork error on the part of the Chicago Bears, the Vikings were able to sign Bates without having to give up a third-round draft choice to the Bears as compensation.

Then the Bears matched the offer, hoping to rework the deal to a more comfortable cap number. When Bates refused because he said all along that he wanted to play for Minnesota, where he would receive more playing time, the Bears released him. The Vikings offered the same deal to Bates they had originally agreed upon, and now Bates has a chance to become the No. 3 receiver.

2001: Stuck behind a deep receiving corps in Chicago, Bates had a career-high nine catches for 160 yards and was inactive for the first five games of the season.

2000: Was inactive for the first five games of the season and ended with four receptions for 42 yards.

1999: Drafted out of Northwestern in the third round by Chicago and had two catches in his rookie season.

College: Had 210 receptions, 3,370 yards and 26 touchdowns over the course of his four-year career at Northwestern, all school records. Finished second in the Big Ten for career catches and yards. While with the Wildcats, Bates won two Big Ten titles and appeared in two bowl games. Named All-Big Ten his senior season.
