Before the 2001 season, the Vikings extended Randy Moss’ contract through 2008. A look at his accomplishments will show why.
2001: Caught 82 passes for 1,233 yards. Reached 5,000 career receiving yards faster than anyone in the history of the NFL, doing it in 59 games. Outpaced all other receivers in history in his first four seasons with 5,396 yards.
2000: Was named the Pro Bowl’s Most Outstanding Player after setting records for catches (nine) and receiving yards (212) and broke his own team receiving record with 1,437 yards. Was named All-Pro by the Associated Press, USA Today and College & Pro Football Weekly.
1999: Led the team in receiving yards (1,413) on 80 catches and had 11 touchdowns. Made the Pro Bowl again and was named to the All-Madden Team.
1998: Made the Pro Bowl, was named rookie of the year by nearly every national sports publication.
Set many more NFL records, including touchdown receptions by a rookie (17) and tied Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch with 10 touchdowns of 40-plus yards. Moss and Cris Carter combined to set the NFL record for most touchdown receptions by a duo with 29. Moss led the NFL with 17 TD catches and tied the team’s single-season record.
Other Vikings records held by Moss include: Rookie receiving yards, rookie touchdown catches, first rookie to score two touchdowns in his first game in the NFL, most games with a touchdown pass in a season (11), most two-touchdown games as a rookie (four) and most plays of 40 or more yards (14).
College: At Marshall, Moss caught 145 passes for 2,720 yards and 53 touchdowns in two seasons. Name All-American and All-Mid-American Conference in 1996 and 1997. Finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting. |
