| Born Mitch Shannon Berger in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada…all-provincial as punter and kicker at North Delta High in Vancouver in his only season of football…intercepted six passes and completed 76-of-150 passes for 1,250 yards and eight touchdowns that year…was all-provincial in basketball and lettered in volleyball in high school…brother Mike was an all-Canadian basketball player at Vancouver Community College…an avid golfer, he has participated in the Cadillac NFL Golf Tournament…was named to the University of Colorado Team of the Decade for the 1990’s as the team’s punter…active in the Twin Cities community while with Vikings by working with Special Olympics, Camp Heartland, and The Salvation Army…single…resides in St. Louis.
Dependable, veteran punter…very good directional punter…outstanding release time…signed by Rams 4/17/02 as free agent…played five seasons for Minnesota (1996-2000)…spent five games in 1994 with Philadelphia and spent seven weeks on Cincinnati’s practice squad…held for Gary Anderson’s field goal vs. Buffalo 10/22/00 that established Anderson as the NFL all-time scoring leader, breaking the mark held by George Blanda…held for Anderson when he was an NFL record-setting perfect 94-of-94 during the 1998 regular-season (35-of-35 field goals, 59-of-59 PATs)…has a current streak of 344 punts without a block…ranks second in Vikings history in punts (386), punting yards (16,795), and punts inside the 20 (109)…originally drafted in the sixth round (193rd overall) of the 1994 NFL Draft by the Eagles. 2001: Averaged 43.5 yards on 47 punts with 10 inside the 20, 10 touchbacks and a long of 67 to go with his four special teams tackles…had season-long 67-yard punt, and had a touchdown-saving special teams tackle at New Orleans 10/7…had a season-high eight punts for a 46.4-yard average with one inside the 20, a long of 51, and one special teams tackle vs. Chicago 11/25…averaged 47.7 yards per punt with a long of 55 at Pittsburgh 12/2…placed on reserve/injured list 12/18 with knee and neck injuries. 2000: Averaged 44.7 yards on 62 punts for 2,773 yards with a long of 60, 11 touchbacks, and 16 inside the 20…posted three special teams tackles on the season…punted 11 times in the postseason for 39.5-yard average with a long of 54, two touchbacks, and two landing inside the 20…named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for performance vs. Detroit 11/30 that included his season-long 60-yard punt…set a Vikings record for most 50+ yard punts in a season with 22, breaking the mark of 18 he had in 1999 and Jim Walden had in 1964…notched season-best 52.0 average vs. Tampa Bay 10/9 on Monday Night Football…averaged 49.2 on five punts vs. Detroit 11/30…averaged 50.0 on five punts at St. Louis 12/10…averaged 48.7 on three punts with one inside the 20 vs. Green Bay 12/17…tied career-high and a Vikings record by pinning five punts inside the 20 at Indianapolis 12/24 in the regular-season finale…over final four games of regular season, had 20 punts for 48.2 average and landed seven inside 20…earned NFC Special Teams Player of the Month honors for December, punting 15 times in three games for a 48.2-yard average with a long of 57 and six placed inside the 20. 1999: Earned first Pro Bowl selection…named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September…punted 61 times for 45.4-yard average with a long of 75 yards…also had nine touchbacks and 18 inside the 20…led the NFC and ranked second in the NFL with a 45.4 punting average and a 38 |
