Brooks Bollinger enters training camp with the opportunity to compete for a starting quarterback job against youngster Tarvaris Jackson after the Vikings released 2006 starter Brad Johnson. Bollinger was acquired to be a veteran backup to Johnson shortly before the start of the 2006 regular season and saw action in just two games during the season.
Before coming to the Vikings, Bollinger spent three years with the New York Jets as a project quarterback who got to start nine games in 2005 due to numerous QB injuries. He has a 2-7 career record as a starter.
How Acquired: In a preseason 2006 trade with the Jets in which the Vikings sent New York DT C.J. Mosley and an undisclosed draft pick.

2006: Was acquired by the Vikings Aug. 31. Played in two games for the Vikings – vs. New England (Oct. 22) and Chicago (12/3). Completed 13 of 18 passes (72.2 percent) for 146 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. His season-long pass was a 50-yard pass play to Mewelde Moore, which would tie for the longest pass play of the year for the Vikings.
2005: Played in 11 games and started nine for the Jets, completing 150 of 266 passes (56.4 percent) for 1,558 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. Had a career-best day vs. Miami in Week 15, completing 28 of 42 passes for 327 yards and one touchdown and posted a passer rating of 106.0. He relieved injured quarterbacks Chad Pennington, Jay Fiedler and Vinny Testaverde during an injury-riddled season.
2004: Played in one game in 2004 – a 13-3 midseason win over Arizona. He replaced injured starter Quincy Carter on the third play of the game and completed five of the nine passes he threw for 60 yards.
2003: Taken by New York in the sixth round of the draft with the 200th pick, but didn’t see any action. He was listed as the second quarterback for the first six games and was the third QB the final 10 games of the season.
College: Compiled a 30-12 record as a starter at Wisconsin, becoming just the seventh Big 10 quarterback to post 30 career wins. Finished his college career second all-time on the Wisconsin passing records for attempts (771), completions (414), yards (5,627) and touchdowns (38). Holds the all-time school record for career rushing by a quarterback, running the ball 518 times for 1,767 yards and a whopping 26 touchdowns. As a senior, he finished second for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award to USC’s Carson Palmer. Was named Big 10 Conference Freshman of the Year in 1999. Played with former Vikings Michael Bennett and Ross Kolodziej at Wisconsin. Majored in sociology.
Personal: Played quarterback at Central High School in Grad Forks, N.D. His father Rob was an offensive coordinator for the University of North Dakota. Has been active in the Alliance for Lupus charity. Was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2000 despite not having played baseball since his American Legion ball days as a teenager.
