| Biography: |
The Vikings signed free agent John Avery on Feb. 13, 2002 in hopes that he would compete for the kickoff return duties and give them an added dimension as a third-down running back. After coming into the league as a first-round draft pick in 1998, Avery has struggled to put together a consistent career. He will look to build that in Minnesota.
2002: Helped Edmonton of the Canadian Football League advance to the Grey Cup title game. Ran for 1,448 yards, with a 6.3-yard average, and nine touchdowns. Also displayed his pass-catching ability with 45 receptions for 387 yards and two touchdowns, and he averaged 25.4 yards on 26 kickoff returns.
2001: Led the XFL with 800 yards rushing while playing for the Chicago Enforcers.
2000: Did not play.
1999: Played sparingly for Miami and Denver, rushing five times, catching four passes and returning nine kickoffs.
1998: As a rookie with Miami, rushed 143 times for 503 yards and two touchdowns. Caught 10 passes and returned 43 kickoffs for a 25.2-yard average. Had the third-most rushing yards for a rookie in 1998, trailing Fred Taylor and Robert Edwards. His 1,655 combined yards (rushing, receiving and returns) was a Dolphins single-season record. Played in 16 games, all as a reserve.
College: Transferred from Northwest (Miss.) Community College to Ole Miss. In two seasons at Mississippi, he had 1,650 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. Also caught 35 passes for 212 yards, and returned 30 kickoffs for a 26.3-yard average, including three touchdowns. Named second-team All-SEC after his senior year.
