| Biography: |
When the Vikings decided in 2002 to spend a little extra money to get some of the better rookie free agents, one name that surfaced was Jack Brewer. He was signed three days after the 2002 draft and began his climb up the Vikings’ depth chart.
He came to the Vikings after splitting time in college between safety and wide receiver, so his transition to the NFL as a full-time safety was bound to take some time.
2002: By the end of the season, he had earned his first career start at free safety and posted six tackles. Played in 15 games and led the Vikings with 26 special teams tackles, eight more than any other teammate, showing he has a nose for the ball carrier. Finished the season with 10 tackles on defense and two interceptions.
College: Earned the Carl Eller Award as the University of Minnesota’s best defensive player and the Paul Giel Award for unselfish team play. Selected to play in the East-West Shrine game and the Senior Bowl. In his senior season, he finally was able to start every game at safety and concentrate his efforts solely on the defensive side of the ball. Led the team in tackles his senior year.
Led Grapevine (Tex.) High to a 15-0 record and the Texas 4A title as a two-way starter at wide receiver and strong safety. Four-year letterman in football, and the Texas Relays prep triple jump champion.
