Antrel Rolle named to Pro Bowl roster

Antrel Rolle | New York Giants

The New York Giants will have a representative in the Pro Bowl after all, as Antrel Rolle was chosen to replace the Seattle Seahawks Earl Thomas.

The Giants no longer have to worry about not having a representative present at this year's Pro Bowl. That's because safety Antel Rolle was named as a substitute on Monday for Seattle's Earl Thomas. Thomas will be missing the NFL's all-star game because his team is playing in the Super Bowl on February 2.

Rolle was miffed that he wasn't included in the Pro Bowl when the original version of the roster was released last month, but now that has been amended.

"It's never been about going to Hawaii," he said today. "It was always about getting what I very well deserved and what I accomplished throughout the year and going out there and representing my team."

It's tough for anyone to argue that Rolle doesn't deserve to go to Hawaii this year. In his ninth NFL season, the veteran posted career highs with two sacks and six interceptions for a Giants defense that ranked eighth in the league in passing yards allowed. Add in 85 solo tackles, and 2013 was a career year for Rolle, who had previously been selected to the Pro Bowl in 2009 and 2010.

"It was definitely one of my best years," said Rolle, "Not so much for the big plays I made, but for being a very, very consistent player at whatever position I'm asked to play. It's going out there and playing that position at a dominant level."

If Rolle hadn't been selected to the Pro Bowl, it would have been the first time since 1996 in which the Giants didn't have a representative. The last time the team had just one all-star was in 2007, when Osi Umenyiora went to Hawaii and the Giants won their third Super Bowl title.

The 2014 Pro Bowl will be held at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu Hawaii on January 26. Unlike in past seasons when the AFC all-stars faced off against the NFC's best, this year's teams were decided by a draft that took place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
