QB Drew Henson

Quarterback Drew Henson is the "other" quarterback in the mix for a roster spot this fall with the Vikings, competing with rookie Tyler Thigpen for the No. 3 spot on the opening-day roster behind Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger.

Quarterback Drew Henson has spent a lot of time in the limelight, at the University of Michigan, with the New York Yankees baseball organization and with the Dallas Cowboys.  With the Vikings, he just quietly wants a chance to play pro football, according to this USAToday.com story.

>Peterson delighted to be a Viking
Top pick Adrian Peterson told Rich Eisen of NFL Network in an interview at the rookie symposium that, " I couldn't have landed in a better place than the Vikings."  This post at NFLDraftBible says he'll also have teeny, tiny little chip on his shoulder for not being taken sooner in the draft.

In this analysis of NFC teams and their run/pass ratio in 2006, the Vikings were 55% pass to 45% run last season.  The prediction for 2007, with the addition of Adrian Peterson, if for more balance in the year ahead.

Rookie running back Adrian Peterson is expected to be featured next week in a five-part series on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” and “NFL Live” according to Judd Zulgad and Don Seeholzer.

>Vikings could carry European player on practice squad
Sid Hartman reports that the Vikings might be carrying an extra player on their practice squad this season from Europe as part of a league initiative, according to VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman.

>Doss sponsoring free youth football camp
This is what football players involved in their community do this time of year – they participate in football camps.  Vikings’ safety Mike Doss will have one this Saturday, according to the CantonRep.com.

>Money needs to follow mouth
The Vikes Geek suggests doing something with the $30 million or so the Vikings currently have in salary-cap space.  The suggestion here is to identify long-term fixtures (i.e. Pat Williams, Darrion Scott?) and bring their salaries forward to 2007.

>Vikings not getting much love in Fantasy Football Rankings
In a list of the 2007 Fantasy Football Rankings Top 200 Players on SI.com, there were three Viking players listed:  RB Adrian Peterson (56), RB Chester Taylor (82) and WR Troy Williamson (175).  Here’s where Viking players ranked at their respective positions:  quarterback Tarvaris Jackson (30); running back Peterson (26), Taylor (33) and Mewelde Moore (78); wide receiver Williamson (61), Sidney Rice (75) and Bobby Wade (86); tight end Visanthe Shiancoe was not ranked among the top 35; kicker Ryan Longwell (29).  The Vikings Defense was ranked at 19 overall among team defenses.

>Vikes involvement in prep All-Star game
As previously reported in this space, the Vikings are partnering with FSN North to broadcast Saturday’s prep football all-star game at St. Cloud State’s Husky Stadium.  FSN North’s Anthony LaPanta will provide play-by-play and current FSN Vikings Weekly analyst and former Vikings running backs coach Dean Dalton will offer analysis.  Vikings fullback Tony Richardson and Vikings Weekly host Ann Carroll will handle sideline reporting duties.

>Berger looking for comeback with Packers?
Ex-Vikings punter Mitch Berger is reportedly talking to the Green Bay Packers about making a comeback after sitting out all of last season.  Berger was the Vikings punter and kickoff specialist from 1996-2001.

>Cutting players for off-field actions now common
It was a pretty big deal when the Vikings released WR Koren Robinson shortly after his off-field arrest during training camp last season.  Now it has become a more common practice around the league.  On the heels of the Bears letting Tank Johnson go earlier this week, the Dolphins pulled the plug on DT Fred Evans following his arrest.  The NFLPA is not challenging these moves and apparently has accepted the fact that it's okay to dump a player who gets into trouble off the field.  Ko-Ro might have been the first, but he certainly won't be the last.  Other players who've gotten the boot shortly following an off-field incident include Ahmad Carroll (Jaguars), A.J. Nicholson (Bengals) and Richard Seigler (Steelers).

>Sherman now working with another high-maintenance receiver
Ray Sherman, who worked with Randy Moss with the Vikings under head coach Dennis Green, is now coaching Terrell Owens and the wide receivers with the Dallas Cowboys.

>Lynch suing over league’s disability plan
Add former NFL center Ben Lynch to the growing list of players with a grievance with the league over injuries sustained as a player.  Lynch spent some time with the Vikings on their practice squad in 1996-97.  Lynch is filing a lawsuit against the league over its disability plan, as he now suffers from something called reflex dystrophy syndrome (RDS).

>Rookie symposium enjoys perfect attendance
For the third straight year the league’s rookie symposium had perfect attendance from all the league’s rookies according to ESPN.com.

>Culpepper grievance to be heard tomorrow
Former Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper will have his grievance with the Dolphins heard tomorrow.  There is a two week timetable expected for a ruling according to published reports.

>Birk hosts annual golf event
Vikings center Matt Birk held his fifth annual celebrity golf classic earlier this month to help raise money for his HIKE Foundation.  It's an older story from earlier this month, but here's a video clip and a link to the KARE-11 story.
